How to Pass a Phone Screen Interview

The first-round call that decides whether you advance. What recruiters are really checking for and how to clear the bar.

The phone screen is the first live round — usually a 20–30 minute call with a recruiter. It's not where you win the job, but it's absolutely where you can lose it. Here's how to clear it.

What the recruiter is checking

  • Basic fit: do you meet the core requirements?
  • Communication: can you speak clearly and concisely?
  • Motivation: why this role, why now?
  • Logistics: salary expectations, location, notice period, availability.
  • Red flags: anything that contradicts your resume.

How to prepare

  1. Re-read the job posting and your own resume right before the call — they'll ask about both.
  2. Prepare your "tell me about yourself" and "why this role" answers.
  3. Know your salary range and be ready to give it.
  4. Have questions ready about the role and process.

During the call

  • Find a quiet space with good signal. Background noise reads as unprofessional.
  • Stand or sit up — it changes your energy and clarity.
  • Keep answers tight. On a phone, rambling is worse; the recruiter can't read your body language.
  • Have your resume in front of you so your answers line up with it.
  • Smile when you talk. It genuinely comes through in your voice.

The salary question

It almost always comes up. Give a researched range, not a single number, and frame it as flexible depending on the full package. Dodging it entirely can stall you.

After the call

Send a short thank-you, confirm next steps, and note any dates they mentioned. Clear the screen and you're into the rounds that actually decide.
