12 Action Verbs That Make Your Resume Stronger
Swap weak, passive phrasing for verbs that convey ownership and impact — with before/after examples.
Weak verbs make strong work sound small. "Helped with," "responsible for," and "worked on" bury your impact. Lead every bullet with a verb that shows ownership.
Verbs by what you did
- Built something: Launched, Built, Designed, Developed, Created, Established.
- Improved something: Streamlined, Optimized, Accelerated, Reduced, Increased.
- Led something: Spearheaded, Directed, Orchestrated, Drove, Coordinated.
- Delivered results: Delivered, Generated, Negotiated, Secured, Closed.
Before and after
- Was responsible for the onboarding process → Redesigned the onboarding process, cutting ramp time 33%.
- Helped increase sales → Drove a 22% increase in regional sales over two quarters.
- Worked on the migration → Led the migration of 40k records with zero downtime.
Two quick rules
- One strong verb per bullet, at the very start.
- Don't repeat the same verb — vary "managed" across "led," "oversaw," "directed."
The verb sets the tone. Choose ones that make it obvious you owned the outcome, not just the task.
